In details made available to Shemnews, the initiative aims to attract both African and international capital for high-impact projects. Hosting President Bio in Lagos ahead of the inaugural West Africa Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS), Elumelu Chairman of Heirs Holdings and co-chair of the summit—convened the first in-person meeting of the WAIIS Private Sector Advisory Board, bringing together key business and financial leaders.
Extensive Project Selection The investment pipeline has already progressed beyond an initial collection of proposals. Organizers have reviewed 170 project submissions, carefully selecting 26 viable projects currently valued at over $10 billion spanning more than ten countries. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, WAIIS special envoy, noted that the portfolio is expected to reach $15 billion or more by the time the summit officially convenes in Sierra Leone this November.
Strategic Investment Priorities The multi-billion-dollar pipeline is heavily focused on addressing the region's core development needs. Key investment priorities and advisory board discussions center around energy infrastructure, trade and industrialization, strategic minerals, agribusiness, and comprehensive digital transformation.
Institutional Financial Backing To ensure these regional development priorities are transformed into bankable projects, Elumelu reaffirmed his commitment to mobilizing significant capital. The initiative is working closely with major financial institutions, including the Africa Finance Corporation, Afreximbank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Ecobank, to finance the priority projects.
The upcoming November meeting, initiated and convened by President Bio, is expected to bring project sponsors and prospective lenders together to accelerate investment discussions, providing a practical framework to direct much-needed capital toward productive sectors across West Africa.
