While the American pastor and his first wife publicly defended their three-year polygamous union with Minister Shakeyla as a divine family dynamic, a theological review of Christian scripture reveals that such an arrangement violates foundational biblical principles.

Strict Pastoral Qualifications The New Testament expressly prohibits polygamy for those holding spiritual authority in the church. According to 1 Timothy 3:2, an overseer or pastor must be "the husband of one wife." This identical, uncompromising standard is repeated for church elders in Titus 1:6. Under New Testament doctrine, entering into a polygamous union automatically disqualifies a man from pastoral ministry.

God's Original Blueprint This arrangement fundamentally violates God's original design for marriage. Genesis 2:24 establishes the marital covenant as an exclusive union, stating that a man shall hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh. Jesus Christ reaffirmed this exact standard in Matthew 19:4-6, emphasizing that "the two" become one, deliberately excluding any third party from the marital bond.

The Symbolism of Christ and the Church Furthermore, Ephesians 5:31-33 describes marriage as a profound reflection of the relationship between Christ and the Church. Because Christ has only one bride, the biblical model requires singular, monogamous devotion. While polygamy was practiced by certain figures in the Old Testament, it was a cultural reality that consistently resulted in severe domestic strife and spiritual compromise. Consequently, the New Testament explicitly restored and enforced strict monogamy for all believers, particularly those occupying church leadership roles.
