In remarks made available to Shemnews on Saturday during his 60th birthday, retirement thanksgiving, and book presentation, Nkangwung reflected on his exit from public service and the true measure of a successful career. He stressed that a person's worth should not be determined exclusively by material accumulation or property ownership. "Money is not everything, but whatever you have done in the sense of time will stand and that’s what people will say something about," Nkangwung explained.
To mark the milestone, Nkangwung unveiled an autobiography documenting his experiences and years in public service, offering a roadmap for the younger generation. Key insights and messages from the event included:
Patience and Self-Development: Nkangwung cautioned young professionals against cutting corners or engaging in illicit activities for protection or rapid advancement, noting that such choices ultimately jeopardize careers and compound personal problems.
The Value of Time: Rt. Rev. Duke Akamisoko, Bishop of the Diocese of Kubwa, delivered a reflective address on the irreversibility of time. Calculating the celebrant’s 60 years as approximately 21,900 days, the bishop urged attendees to use their remaining time purposefully and view past difficulties as stepping stones rather than sources of regret.
A Legacy of Philanthropy: Colleagues and family members lauded Nkangwung's selflessness. His wife, Grace Nkangwung, a Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), described him as a philanthropist who consistently sacrificed personal comfort for the benefit of others, while his son, Awajiigbana Nkangwung, cited his father as a lifelong role model.
A New Chapter: While his formal career with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has concluded, Nkangwung emphasized that his retirement does not signify an end to his work, but rather a transition into a new phase of societal contribution and mentorship.
Former colleagues, including Celestine Chowuba of the NOSDRA Gombe Office and retired staff member Raph Ngnam, echoed praises for his exemplary conduct, affirming that lasting respect in public service is built on sincerity, dedication, and a commitment to speaking the truth.
