Heavy-Duty Drivers Shut Down Bida Roads to Protest Deplorable Highway Conditions
Heavy-duty vehicle drivers have paralyzed traffic by blocking all major entry routes into Bida in Niger State, staging a massive protest over the government’s failure to commence reconstruction of the rapidly deteriorating Bida-Agaie-Lapai highway. BIDA, Nigeria, Oct. 7, 2026
In field reports and driver testimonies made available to Shemnews on Wednesday, protesters expressed deep frustration over the lack of federal intervention. The heavily damaged roadways have become a severe bottleneck for regional transport, causing regular accidents and threatening interstate commerce.
Key developments from the ongoing blockade include:
Severe Navigational Hazards: Protester Buhari Aliyu stated that the road has deteriorated to the point where commercial vehicles frequently break down or completely overturn. He demanded that the government either launch immediate reconstruction efforts or reopen an alternative route through Bida to ease the severe hardship on motorists. Mounting Economic Toll: Suleiman Kaduna, a driver hauling freight from Kaduna to Lagos, explained that the barricade is a desperate measure to force federal action. "We lose lives and property worth millions of naira on a daily basis because of the deplorable state of the road," he said, vowing the route will remain closed until machinery is mobilized. Stalled Negotiations: Aishat Sa’adu, the Niger Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed that the agency attempted to persuade the drivers to lift the blockade. The intervention was unsuccessful, as protesters outright refused to clear the barricades until they are addressed directly by a Federal Government representative.
